Do you wish you'd had the chance to take QM in college, but never got the chance? Then put your thinking caps on and get your pencils out...
I know that there is a depth and breadth of mathematical and physics knowledge within the group here and for the past several months a handful of us leaning towards the more technical and mathematical end have been meeting to discuss and work through a handful of texts relating to Lie Groups, Algebras and Representations as they relate to physics. We've decided that it would be interesting to work through one (or more) of the standard texts in Quantum Mechanics beginning sometime in July and thought some of you might like to join us in the endeavor. You can find a preliminary discussion of texts at the following Google Group - Adv_Phy_Math_LA at the following link: Adv_Phy_Math_LA Feel free to ask to join the Adv_Phy_Math_LA group and join us in the discussion there as well. The general plan is to meet every couple of weeks to discuss and help each other work through actual math/physics problems relating to quantum mechanics to gain a better grasp of the material. Specific dates and times will be worked out amongst the group as we proceed along, but join in the preliminary discussion of which text(s) would be most appropriate. Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any. Best regards, Chris |

Last chance, Quantum Mechanics kick off!
For those who wish to join a small, but dedicated group of us die-hards, we'll be meeting on Monday, August 4, 2008 from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm At Denny's Restaurant, 14301 Inglewood Ave, Hawthorne, CA 90250 Just south of LAX off 405 at the corner of Inglewood Ave & Rosecrans Ave We will be studying chapters 1 & 2 of Quantum Mechanics Demystified by David McMahon (The text should be very accessible if you've had a little calculus and an intro physics course and we'll move onto something slightly more complex after we've worked through McMahon's book) We anticipate meeting approximately every two weeks. Send me an email or join the Google Group if you have any questions. This discussion will move to the Google Group page for those who wish to continue following it. See you hopefully on Monday, and definitely on Friday to continue our discussion on Penrose's text. Cheers, Chris |

A handful of us are restarting the QM reading group (after having been sidetracked with Lie Groups) and are currently expecting about 5-7 people who have committed to some meaningful work. Those of you interested are more than welcome to join in with us.
We will be meeting for the beginning of our study on Jan 8, 2009 (Thursday) at 6:30 PM. Address is: Denny's Restaurant at corner of Rosecrans and Inglewood. 14301 Inglewood Ave Hawthorne, CA 90250 Phone: 3106766097 The book we will be reading is R.Shankar's "Principles of Quantum Mechanics", Second edition. Further information for the group and details can be found at Advanced Math & Physics along with a digital copy of the book for those who may not have had a chance to read it yet. If you have the opportunity beforehand, try to read through the first chapter which is a review of classical mechanics. Over the next six months or so, we all expect to work our way through the entire text. Stop by and have dinner, a snack, a beverage and work through some QM with us. Hope to see you there.
